31st May:

South Uist: Common Crossbill at Loch Eynort. Spotted Flycatcher, House Martin and 2 Sandwich Terns at South Glendale.

Insects: 2 Large Heath, 23 Small Heath and 3 Common Blue butterflies in South Glendale. 2 Small Heath at Kildonan.

17 Species of macro moth trapped at Drimsdale, South Uist last night including Heart and Dart and Mottled Rustic. 15 Species of macro moth were caught at Carinish, North Uist producing a grand total of 20 species in all, last night.

30th May:

North Uist: Late news from the 29th May - male Wilson's Phalarope seen yesterday afternoon on Baleshare, flew off to south-west and not seen again. 

Benbecula: male Garganey on Loch Fada.

Basking Shark to north-east of Aird an Runair today.

Insects: Poplar Hawkmoth, Spectacle, Broom, Clouded-bordered Brindle, 5 Bright-line Brown-eye, 2 Shears, 4 Silver Ground Carpet and 22 White Ermine trapped at Drimsdale, South Uist.

1 Elephant Hawkmoth; 3 Flame Shoulder; 1 Clouded-bordered Brindle; 2 Garden Carpet; 1 Bright-line Brown-eye and a Small Angle Shades trapped at Carinish, North Uist last night.

29th May:

Lewis: Glaucous Gull in Stornoway harbour. Swift seen over Beinn Barvas today.

North Uist: Quail calling Balranald. Imm. Iceland Gull Loch Sandary.

Insects: Poplar Hawkmoth, Elephant Hawkmoth, Angle Shades, Broom, Bright-line Brown-eye, 12 Silver Ground Carpet, 10 White Ermine, 2 Flame Shoulder and Flame Carpet trapped at Drimsdale last night.

28th May:

Lewis: calling Quail close to main road a couple of miles south of Stornoway.

South Uist: near adult Glaucous Gull and immature Iceland Gull at Ardvule. Male Goldeneye Loch Grogarry and Redwing nearby.

Insects: 3 Flame Shoulder, Shears, Grey Scalloped Bar, Knotgrass and 2 Broom trapped at Carinish, North Uist last night.

27th May:

Lewis: Lesser Whitethroat at Brue. Female Red-necked Phalarope on RSPB Loch na Muilne. 19 Black-tailed Godwits at Barvas. 1st sum Iceland Gull at Stornoway. Grasshopper Warbler at Newmarket. 19 Long-tailed Duck still off the Braigh.

North Uist: Female Red-backed Shrike Malaclete. Imm. Iceland Gull over Balranald and later on Loch Hosta. Quail calling at Balranald.

Benbecula: Male Garganey on Coot Loch, plus male Scaup there.

South Uist: Golden Oriole at Askernish. Sandwich Tern in the Sound of Barra from the Pollachar with 4 there the previous evening.

Basking Shark off Aird an Runair, Balranald at around mid-day today. A shark was also seen off-shore at Drinishader, Harris today.

26th May:

Lewis: 2 Siskin at Leurbost.

North Uist: Little Stint still at Loch Paible. Male American Wigeon on Loch a'Charra. Siskin singing at Langass and others heard over the Committe Road.

Insects: Campion, Garden Carpet, 2 Knotgrass, 3 White Ermine, Dark Sword Grass and Poplar Hawkmoth trapped at Askernish last night.

North Rona: Trumpeter Finch seen today.

North Uist: Red-backed Shrike seen at Balranald cemetery this morning. Male American Wigeon at Loch a'Charra.

24th May:

St. Kilda: Short-toed Lark on Hirta.

North Uist: male Red-backed Shrike Clachan Farm, also Turtle Dove seen there in the morning and Redwing in the afternoon. Spotted Flyctacher at Middlequater. American Wigeon on Loch a'Charra. Turtle Dove at Carinish. Brent Goose Loch Paible.

South Uist: Spotted Flycatcher at South Glendale.

Insects: White Ermine, Broom, Spectacle and 3 Shears trapped at Drimsdale last night. 1 Angle Shades, 2 Sharks, 1 Narrow-winged Pug, 1 Spectacle, 2 Shears and 1 Broom Moth trapped at Carinish.

23rd May:

Lewis: Little Stint at Loch Barvas.

St. Kilda: Male Snowy Owl, Bluethroat, Blue-headed Wagtail and Turtle Dove on Hirta.

North Uist: Male Subalpine Warbler at Middlequarter. Male American Wigeon at Loch a'Charra. 3 Little Stints on Loch Paible plus a single Brent Goose and Barnacle Goose there. Hobby seen at the north end of the Committe Road this evening.

Benbecula: Little Stint on Loch Mor. Wood Sandpiper on Loch Fada and male Garganey on Coot Loch.

South Uist: Spotted Flycatcher at Askernish.

Insects: Beautiful Yellow Underwing at Kildonan today plus one at Askernish yesterday.

22nd May:

Lewis: Little Stint at Loch Barvas. Wood Sandpiper at Loch Stiapavat. Spotted Flyctacher Brue. House Martin Arnol and Barvas.

Insects:  5 Flame Carpet, 1 White Ermine, 4 Knot Grass, 1 Garden Carpet, 1 Red Chestnut, 1 Shears, 2 Elephant Hawkmoth, 1 Flame Shoulder, 1 Glaucous Shears, 3 Shark, 1 Bright Line Brown Eye and a single Clouded Bordered Brindle trapped at Carinish, North Uist.

11 Brown Silver-line, 8 Shears, 4 Narrow-winged Pug, 6 Knotgrass, 2 Flame Shoulder, 2 Broom, 1 Dark-barred Twin Spot Carpet, 3 White Ermine, 2 Fox Moth, 2 Red Chestnut, 2 Striped Twin Spot Carpet, 1True Lovers Knot and 1 Ling Pug trapped at South Glendale. 1 Glaucous Shears, 1 Knotgrass, 1 Spectacle, 3 White Ermine, 1 Dark Sword Grass trapped at Drimsdale.

2 Small Heath butterflies and Four-spotted Chaser at Howmore, South Uist.

21st May:

St. Kilda: Male Ortolan Bunting, Bluethroat and Quail on Hirta as well as Spotted Flycatcher, Blackcap and Chiffchaff.

North Uist: Little Egret seen at Malaclete and Sollas although mobile. Male American Wigeon on Loch a' Charra, west of Committee Road. Turtle Dove at Loch Bhrusda, Beneray with 2 Coot there also. Turtle Dove at Grenitote. 2nd cal yr Iceland Gull at Balranald and Loch Sandary.

Benbecula: 4 Black-tailed Godwits Loch Mor.

South Uist: Turtle Dove at Snishival.

Insects: 2 Dark-barred Twin Spot Carpet, 7 Brown Silver Line, 9 Knotgrass, 3 Red Chestnut, 3 White Ermine, 8 Shears, 5 Glaucous Shears, 1 Scalloped Hazel, 1 Hebrew Character, 2 Broom, 3 Fox Moth and 2 Narrow-winged Pugs trapped at South Glendale last night. 3 Dar-barred Twin Spot, 1 White Ermine, 1 Shark, 2 Shears, 1 Dark Sword Grass, 2 Knotgrass and 1 Dark Brocade trapped at Drimsdale, South Uist last night.

Brown Silver-line, 2 Flame Shoulders, Flame Carpet,  Knot Grass, Glaucous Shears, Shark, Dark Brocade and Grey Scalloped Bar at   Carinish, North Uist last night.

20th May:

Sound of Harris: Surf Scoter reported (Bird Guides)

North Uist: Snowy Owl Grenitote. Whitethroat near Loch Portain turning.

South Uist: Pink-footed Goose at Balgarva. Whitethroat at South Glendale. 3 Whooper Swans at Smerclate. Goldcrests fledged at Loch Eynort.

Barra: Golden Oriole at North Bay this afternoon. Also 3 Whinchat and at least 3 Whitethroat and Blackcap on the island.

Basking Shark to the south of Eriskay from the ferry to Barra this evening.

Insects: 2 White Ermine, 2 Glaucous Shears, 9 Shears, 2 Knotgrass, 2 Broom, 1 Red Chestnut and 2 Fox Moth all trapped at South Glendale, South Uist last night. Knotgrass, Shears and White Ermine trapped at Drimsdale.

North Uist: Male Snowy Owl at Grenitote. 6 Wood Pigeons at Vallay Strand.

South Uist: Wood Warbler singing at North Loch Eynort. Whitethroat at South Glendale.

Insects: 2 Glaucous Shears, 2 Shears, 1 Hebrew Character and 1 Red Chestnut trapped at South Glendale last night.

18th May:

Lewis: 2nd cal yr Iceland Gull Eoropaidh plus male Blackcap singing at Port of Ness.

North Uist: Male Snowy Owl at Grenitote. Pair of Garganey and male Ruff at Loch Grogary. Imm. Iceland Gull Loch Sandary.

Benbecula: Female Ruff on Loch Mor.

South Uist: Female Blackcap and 2 Siskin at South Glendale. 2 House Martin seen over Carnan this evening.

17th May:

North Uist: A White-billed Diver was seen from the Sound of Harris ferry close to Berneray. A Snowy Owl was at Grenitote. Male Garganey on Loch Sandary.

16th May:

North Uist: Male Garganey on Loch Sandary and a pair on Loch na Reivil. Mystery falcon over Loch Paible this afternoon: large, heavy build similar to Peregrine although dark brownish grey above and white below. Contrasting white head whilst perched (at a distance). Wood Sandpiper at Oban Trumisgarry. Barnacle Goose at Loch Paible.

Lewis: Snowy Owl at Crowlista, Uig. Hoopoe at Grimersta.

Harris: Wood Warbler singing at Horgabost. 38 Great Northern Divers in Sound of Taransay.

South Uist: Golden Oriole seen flying west at North Loch Eynort in the morning. Iceland Gull at Ardvule. Chiffchaff singing at Howmore.

Insects: 15 White Ermine, 1 Dark-barred Twin Spot, 2 Spectacle, 1 Clouded Drab, 1 Flame Shoulder, 1 Knotgrass and 1 Flame Carpet trapped at Drimsdale, South Uist last night.

14th May:

Lewis: Bee-eater seen at Dalbeg 16:50 today before heading off slightly south of west.

North Uist: A belated report of a Bee-eater in Lochmaddy yesterday evening. Female Snowy Owl Aird an Runair. Male Ruff at Loch nam Feithean. Pair of Garganey on Loch Grogary. Green-winged Teal reported from Loch Euport. Chiffchaff Griminish. 1st yr Iceland Gull Loch Sandary.

Benbecula: Black-tailed Godwit on Loch Fada.

South Uist: Osprey seen heading east near Loch Eynort. 2 Common Scoter off Ardvule.

Corncrake and Snowy Owl (Steve Duffield)

13th May:

South Uist: Siskin at South Glendale.

Barra: Bee-eater first heard over Gleann (flew in from south / south-west) and then seen in tree tops at Breihvig (5-10 mins). Also on the island were 2 Sand Martin, a Redwing, Turtle Dove, male Whinchat, 4 Whitethroat, 3 male Blackcap, Spotted Flycatcher and around 10 Siskin; plus a male Pochard on Loch Tangusdale.

Insects: Dark Sword Grass (immigrant), Dark-barred Twin-spot, 5 Flame Carpet, Kontgrass, 12 White Ermine, 2 Red Chestnut, Glaucous Shears and a single Belted Beauty trapped at Drimsdale, South Uist last night. Brown Silver Line trapped at Carinish, North Uist. Around 4 female and a single male Belted Beauty were seen around the community hall on Vatersay today.

12th May:

Lewis: Wood Sandpiper near Shawbost.

North Uist: Snowy Owl at Aird an Runair and female flava wagtail nearby at Loch na Roe.

South Uist: Wood Warbler singing at Grogarry Lodge, plus 3 Wood Pigeons there too. 7 Pale-bellied Brent Geese at Balgarva. Siskins at South Glendale and Loch Eynort. Whitethroat at South Glendale. Spotted Flycatcher at Drimsdale in the evening.

At least 6 Bottle-nosed Dolphins feeding to the south-west of Ardvule.

Insects: 2 Flame Carpet, 1 Glaucous Shears, 2 Puss Moth, 1 Shark, 5 Red Chestnut, 8 White Ermine and 1 Brindled Ochre trapped at Drimsdale last night.

11th May:

North Uist: Male Whinchat at the Westford Inn. Wood Pigeon at Strome, Cheese Bay.

Benbecula: Male Garganey on Loch Fada.

Insects: 2 Belted Beauties, 2 Puss Moth, 5 White Ermine and 3 Red Chestnut trapped at Drimsdale last night. Common Heath and male Belted Beauty on the machair at Sollas today.

10th May:

Lewis: Glaucous Gull at Barvas.

North Uist: Female Snowy Owl at Balranald, plus 3 Whimbrel there and a Long-tailed Skua passed Aird an Runair this morning. Male Snowy Owl at Grenitote.

Benbecula: 2nd cal yr Iceland Gull Gramsdale.

South Uist: Male Whinchat at Drimsdale. 2 Wood Pigeons at Grogarry Lodge and 1 at Bornish.

Barra: Garden Warbler, 6 Blackcap, 2 Chiffchaff, Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Whitethroat, Spotted Flycatcher, Turtle Dove (Eoligarry) and 2 Wood Pigeons.

Insects: Angle Shades, Glaucous Shears, 7 Red Chestnut, Clouded Drab, Puss Moth and a pug sp. all trapped at Drimsdale last night. Brown Silver Line (moth) Drimsdale and Great Yellow Bumblebee.

9th May:

North Uist: Spotted Flycatcher on the rocks at Aird an Runair.

South Uist: Spotted Flycatcher, male Blackcap and a Chiffchaff at North Loch Eynort. Female Marsh Harrier heading south over Ben Thatharsal.

8th May:

North Uist: 1st summer Night Heron at Vallay Strand. Wood Pigeon and Siskin also in the area with a Mistle Thrush seen in the evening. 2 male and a female Garganey at Loch nam Feithean.

South Uist: Chiffchaff at Drimsdale. Spotted Flyctacher, Chiffchaff, Sedge Warbler and 2 Wood Pigeons at Grogarry Lodge.                 1st yr Iceland Gull at Peninerine.

Insects: Powdered Quaker trapped at Drimsdale, South Uist (probable first for Outer Hebrides). Red Admiral Claddach Vallay, North Uist. Painted Lady and Great Yellow Bumblebee at Borve Point, Benbecula. Widespread Small Tortoiseshells and Green-veined White butterflies.

7th May:

Lewis: 2 White-billed Divers between Tiumpan Head and Tolsta Head. Near adult American Herring Gull Stornoway. 150 Pink-footed Geese north over Skigersta.

North Uist: Female Snowy Owl at Balranald as well as 1st yr Iceland Gull and Chiffchaff there. 13 Pink-footed Geese Baleshare. Male Whitethroat, Siskin and 1st yr Iceland Gull at Strome, Loch Portain. Adult Curlew Sandpiper at Loch Sandary.

South Uist: Hoopoe reported from D. MacDonald's builders yard at Daliburgh.

Other: Male Belted Beauties seen at Hougharry, and Loch Paible, North Uist. Slow Worm in the hills at Eisgean, Lewis.

6th May:

North Uist: Female Snowy Owl at Balranald. Male Garganey Loch Paible.

South Uist: 1st summer Black-throated Diver off South Glendale plus Blackcap there. Male Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Siskin at Druidibeg. 3 imm. Iceland Gulls at Peninerine. 3 Dotterel West Gerinish.

Barra: Wood Sandpiper flying over Ardmhor ferry terminal. Male Whinchat singing Eoligarry. Whitethroat in song at Castle Bay, plus 4 + Common Redpoll there. Whitethroat and Grasshopper Warbler in song at Breivig. 30 Long-tailed Duck off Allasdale and 2 Whooper Swans at Loch Tangusdale.

Insects: female Belted Beauties (minimum of 10) on posts around the car park by the village hall on Vatersay. Green-veined Whites widespread and common on Barra, plus a few Small Tortoiseshells. Hebrew Character trapped last night at Drimsdale. Puss Moth Muir of Aird (Steve Carter)

5th May:

Lewis: Female Marsh Harrier over Pentland Road. 400 Pink-footed Geese heading south-west down the west side of Lewis. Chiffchaff Showbost.

South Uist: 3 Dotterel at West Gerinish. Male Blackcap and Chiffchaff at Druidibeg plantation. Sand Martin Ardvule, plus 20 Whimbrel and Brent Goose. 2 x 1st yr Iceland Gulls Peninerine. 2nd cal yr Glaucous Gull West Gerinish, heading south.

Insects: Male Belted Beauties seen at Bornish and West Gerinish. Common Heath moth at Druidibeg and North Loch Eynort. Green-veined White butterflies widespread in South Uist.

4th May:

Lewis: Carrion Crow at Borve. Snow Bunting at the Butt of Lewis plus 2 Pink-footed Geese. 40 Pink-footed Geese flew in off the sea at Port of Ness. Male Pintail and Shoveler at Loch Stiapavat as well as 2 Whooper Swans and a pair of nesting Mute Swans. Chiffchaff singing Port of Ness. Grasshopper Warbler singing in the Castle Grounds (3rd May).

North Uist: Adult Ring-billed Gull and Sedge Warbler Loch Sandary. 2 Black-tailed Godwits by Loch Eaval. Pale-bellied Brent Goose Balranald.

Benbecula: 1st yr / 2nd cal. yr Iceland Gull Gramsdale. 44 Pink-footed Geese grounded at Loch Mor.

South Uist: Male Whitethroat South Glendale.

3rd May:

North Uist: Killdeer in the  ploughed fields around the Nissan shed / barn at Balranald. Adult Ring-billed Gull also reported from Loch Sandary in the morning and 2nd cal. yr Iceland Gull at Bayhead.

Benbecula: 2nd cal yr Iceland Gull at Gramsdale.

2nd May:

North Uist: Killdeer at Balranald in ploughed fields / machair to the south-west of the reserve. 5 Black-tailed Godwits and female Pintail also at Baranald. Male Pintail and single Pink-footed Goose on Baleshare. Hoopoe reported from Claddach Vallay this morning.

Insects: Puss Moth trapped at Drimsdale last night and Ruby Tiger found there this afternoon.

Lots of White Wagtails and Wheatears in the Uists today.

North Uist: Garden Warbler at Scotvein, Grimsay.

South Uist: 24 Whimbrel at Howmore. 32 Whimbrel at Smerclate and Siskin at South Glendale. Immature Iceland Gull at Kilpheder.

Insects: 2 male Belted Beauty moths on Borve machair, Benbecula. Male Belted Beauty, 3 Red Chestnut and Puss Moth trapped at Drimsdale, South Uist last night. Green-veined White in Balivanich.
