31st August: Benbecula: At least one Lapland Bunting flew inland over Stinky Bay this morning. South Uist: 5 Lapland Buntings flew south over South Glendale. Insects: A Dark Green Fritillary was at Stoneybridge and a Red Admiral was at Peninerine.
30th August: North Uist: 5 Lapland Buntings were in the stubble at Balelone Farm today. Benbecula: A possible Black-necked Grebe was reported from Stinky Bay this afternoon; there were also 11 Knot present. South Uist: A juvenile Cuckoo was at Grogarry Lodge. 2 Sand Martins are still in the Drimsdale area. Insects: 3 Dark Green Fritillaries and a Peacock butterfly were in the South Glendale area. 2 Red Admirals were at Druidibeg plantation.
29th August: South Uist: 4 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff were at Loch Bornish today. Insects: 4 Red Admirals were at North Loch Eynort today. 28th August: North Uist: 3 Ruff are at Loch Sandary. 2 Lapland Buntings were at Griminish Point today. South Uist: 2 Black-tailed Godwits are at Drimsdale. Insects: The sawfly seen at Drimsdale on 22nd August has been identified as a Greater Horntail Wasp Urocerus gigas. This species is normally associated with conifers.
27th August: North Uist: At least 2 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Sandary and a Whimbrel was at Balranald today. Insects: 3 Painted Ladies were at Balranald. 26th August: Benbecula: 5 Great Northern Divers were off Stinky Bay this morning. South Uist: 2 Ruff are at the south end of Loch Bee. Insects: 7 Emerald Damselflies were seen on the Lewis moor today. 25th August: Lewis: 6 Storm Petrels and a Sooty Shearwater were seen off the Butt of Lewis this morning. 17 Black-tailed Godwits were on Ness machair and 2 were on Barvas machair. North Uist: 2 Lapland Buntings were at Balranald today. 14 Black-tailed Godwits and 2 Ruff were at Loch Sandary. 6 Common Scoters and a winter plumage Great Northern Diver were off the west side of Berneray. Marine Sightings: 1 or 2 Porpoise were seen close into Borve Point, Berneray this morning. 24th August: North Uist: A Slavonian Grebe and 3 Ruff are at Loch Sandary. 33 Knot are at Grenitote. Benbecula: A summer plumage Great Northern Diver was to the south of Stinky Bay this morning. South Uist: A Cuckoo was at Drimsdale this evening (being mobbed by 20 Swallows and 2 Sand Martins). 23rd August: South Uist: 80+ alba Wagtails, 40+ Meadow Pipits, 15+ Wheatears as well as 8 Knot and 2 Whimbrel are at Rubha Ardvule. A Black-tailed Godwit is by Loch Bornish. 22nd August: Lewis: 3 Sooty Shearwaters and 35 Storm Petrels off the Butt of Lewis in a 2.5 hr. seawatch this morning. 7 Black-tailed Godwits, a Whimbrel and a Shoveler were also in the area. A near adult Glaucous Gull was at Swainbost. A juvenile Hen Harrier was on Barvas moor. North Uist: At least 3 Ruff are on Loch Sandary. A Slavonian Grebe is on Loch na Reivil, Hougharry and a Whimbrel is at Balranald. South Uist: 15 Black-tailed Godwits flew south over Drimsdale this morning.
21st August: North Uist: 12 Black-tailed Godwits were on the sands off Ahmore and a single flew south at Hosta. 4 Ruff are at Loch Sandary. 20th August: South Uist: 4 Black-tailed Godwits are in fields at Peninerine. 39 Knot are on the South Ford. 19th August: Benbecula: 8 Knot were in Stinky Bay. South Uist: A Black-tailed Godwit and Ruff are by Loch Bornish. A Cuckoo is at Ormiclate. 18th August: Lewis: A Barred Warbler and Glaucous Gull are in Port of Ness. A Pied Flycatcher is at Bru. Benbecula: A Whimbrel is at Liniclate. South Uist: 2 Ruff are at Rubha Ardvule. Insects: 2 Red Admirals were at Drimsdale and 1 was at North Loch Eynort, South Uist today. After the sighting of Dark Green Fritallaries in Benbecula yesterday is was revealed that 2 were seen at Griminish, Benbecula 7th August. 17th August: Lewis: A Sooty Shearwater was seen off Tiumpan Head this evening. A Gadwall and 2 Whooper Swans are on Loch Tiumpan and Short-eared Owl was nearby. Insects: 2 Dark Green Fritallaries were seen in Benbecula today; 1 at Torlum and another at Griminish. These appear to be the first records from the island although there is another recent record from Loch Euport, North Uist. Marine Sightings: A Basking Shark was off Tiumpan Head this evening. 16th August: South Uist: A Green Sandpiper flew over Drimsdale towards Loch Druidibeg this morning. 2 Common Sandpipers are on Loch Druidibeg and 2 Black-tailed Godwits are on Howmore River. 76 Grey Plover are on the South Ford. Marine Sightings: A Basking Shark (around 3 - 3.5 metres in length) was off the Braighe, Lewis last night. 15th August: South Uist: A juvenile Cuckoo was at Drimsdale and 2 juveniles are in South Glendale. A Common Sandpiper is still at Rubha Ardvule.
14th August: Lewis: 10 Knot at Steinish. Insects: Good catches of moths last night included Anomalous, Haworth's Minor, Neglected Rustic, Striped Twin-spot Carpet, Chestnut-coloured Carpet, Scotch Annulet and Treble-bar amongst others. Migrant moth caught last night in South Uist include a Rush Veneer and Dark Sword Grass. 13th August: Lewis: 12 Black-throated Divers off the Braigh. 6 Crossbills at Aline. North Uist: 21 Black-tailed Godwits were at Balemore today. Benbecula: 11 Black-tailed Godwits are in a field by Stinky Bay. Insects: Moth trapping at South Glendale last night produced a Gothic (previously only recorded from Barra in the Outer Hebrides). 12th August: Lewis: 3 Sooty Shearwaters and 52 Storm Petrels were off Magersta today. Benbecula: 11 Black-tailed Godwits are in a field by Stinky Bay and 3 Knot are in Stinky Bay. South Uist: The Pacific Golden Plover was seen at Ormiclate again this morning. 8 Knot are on the shore to the south of Ardivachar. 3 Black-tailed Godwits are in the fields at Peninerine. A juvenile Cuckoo is in South Glendale. Marine Sightings: 4 Bottle-nosed Dolphins were off Smerclate, South Uist today. 11th August: North Uist: 6 Black-tailed Godwits, a Bar-tailed Godwit and 4 Ruff are in fields at Balemore. South Uist: The Pacific Golden Plover is at Ormiclate again today along with 4 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff. 4 Ruff are in the south bay at Rubha Ardvule and 11 Black-tailed Godwits flew over Drimsdale this morning. 27 Sand Martins were feeding over Loch an Eilein, Drimsdale this morning. 39 Grey Plover and 4 Knot are on the South Ford. 3 knot were also at the north end of Loch Bee. A juvenile Cuckoo was at Eochar.
10th August: Benbecula: A Whimbrel is at Torlum and a Ruff is in Stinky Bay. South Uist: A moulting male Goosander and 2 Common Sandpipers were on the river at Howmore this morning. A Whimbrel was at Ardivachar and 2 Black-tailed Godwits flew south over Balgarva. A Cuckoo was at West Gerinish. Insects: A Dark Spectacle (another first for the Outer Hebrides) was trapped last night in South Glendale. 9th August: South Uist: The Pacific Golden Plover spent much of today around Ormiclate, between Loch Tornish and Ormiclate Castle. 3 Ruff on the south side of Ardvule. A juvenile Cuckoo is in South Glendale. 8th August: Benbecula: 4 Black-tailed Godwits and a Whimbrel are at Liniclate. South Uist: The adult Pacific Golden Plover is still at Bornish this morning although mobile. Originally west of Loch Bornish , close to the coast this morning although moved north later. 2 Ruff were also by Loch Bornish and a Common Sandpiper at Rubha Ardvule. Juvenile Cuckoo at Ormiclate. Insects: A Scalloped Oak was caught at South Glendale last night; this is the first record for the Outer Hebrides. 7th August: South Uist: A juvenile Cuckoo was in Askernish today. Marine Sightings: 4 Basking Sharks were seen feeding off Eoropie beach around 3 pm today.
6th August: Benbecula: A Ruff is in Torlum.
Insects: A Small Magpie moth was trapped at South Glendale last night. This is the first record for the Outer Hebrides. 5th August: South Uist: 14 Black-tailed Godwits flew south over Drimsdale this morning. 3 Ruff are in the north bay at Rubha Ardvule. The Pacific Golden Plover was reported again today from Loch Bornish and a juvenile Cuckoo is in Bornish. Other: 334 Irish Lady's Tresses orchids were found around the east side of Loch Mor, Benbecula today by a group surveying from SNH. This brings the total to 589 flowering spikes found around this single loch this year. 4th August: Lewis: 2 Whooper Swans are over-summering on Loch Tiumpan and on Loch Ordais. A single Black-tailed Godwit is at Loch Ordais. South Uist: A Pacific Golden Plover is amongst around 200 Golden Plover around Loch Bornish today; there were also 12 Black-tailed Godwits in the area. 2 juvenile Cuckoos were at Ormiclate. Marine Sightings: 3 Basking Sharks and a Minke Whale were seen off Labost, Lewis.
3rd August: South Uist: A single Black-tailed Godwit was at Loch Bornish. A juvenile Cuckoo was seen near Druidibeg plantation. 2nd August: South Uist: 4 Ruff were on the edge of Loch Bornish today. A Grasshopper Warbler was heard reeling near the Pollochar early this morning. Marine Sightings: Ca. 10 Bottle-nosed Dolphins were off Rubha Ardvule this morning. Other: A superb total of 255 Irish lady's Tresses orchids were counted on the west side of Loch Mor, Benbecula today by a group from SNH. |
